Margaret W. Campbell, 95, of Huntertown, passed away peacefully at 3:20 p.m., on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at her home.
Born in Canandaigua, New York, on April 23, 1923, the middle child of the three children of the late Edward and Ella (LeGro) Wood. She spent her formative years in Canandaigua and graduated from Canandaigua New York Academy in 1942. After high school she graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology and the College of DuPage.
Margaret was married to Talmage “Bud” Campbell on October 25, 1947, in Canandaigua, New York. The couple lived in Cornell, NY, Decatur, IN, Hoffman Estates, Ill, before settling in Huntertown in 1978. They remained side-by-side until Bud’s death on June 23, 2013.
She began studying library science after high school. She was on the library staff for a defense research project in Rochester, NY, during World War II and continued at the library until she married. Margaret volunteered to develop the first library for Hillcrest Elementary School in Hoffman Estates, Illinois and was hired to operate it. She completed her associate degree in the late 1960's. She finished her career in the libraries of Central Soya in Chicago and later in Fort Wayne. She was a tireless advocate for readers.
Margaret was a member of the Huntertown United Methodist Church, where she was a dedicated choir member and organizer of the library. She volunteered for many activities at the church, at the American Red Cross in Fort Wayne and for several other organizations.
She was an accomplished baker and taught baking to her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a caring mother, devoted and patient wife, wise and one of the gentlest people many have ever known. She often shared gentle humor and encouragement with her family, friends and caregivers.
Margaret is survived by five children, Brian Campbell of Delaware, OH, Blair (Sheila) Campbell of Evanston, IL, Cathleen (Ronald) Gjerde of St. Charles, IL, Connie (Mitchel) McConnell of Brownsburg and Cynthia (James) Hartline of Noblesville; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her grandson, Ian Campbell; a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Campbell; a brother, Edward Wood, Jr and a sister Emily Whitney.
Calling will take place at Huntertown United Methodist Church on Friday, August 10, 2018, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Calling also one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Services will begin at 2:00 PM, at Huntertown United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 11, 2018.
Burial will be in the Number Nine Cemetery, Stanley, New York, on Monday, August 13, 2018, at 11:00 AM.
