Almetta Green, 91, a resident of rural Churubusco and widow of John W. "Bill" Green, passed away at 3:05 p. m. on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at the family residence following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Green was born on September 29, 1921 in Van Buren Township in Grant County, a daughter of Wilbur and Millie (Corey) Nelson.e She spent her formative years there and graduated from Van Buren High School in 1939. On September 18, 1942 she was married at Farville in Grant County to John W.e "Bill" Green. The couple spent the early years of their marriage in Grant County, and lived in LaPorte for a period.e They later lived in Handfield before purchasing the family farm and moving to Churubusco in 1949. A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, she cherished her family and enjoyed cooking, entertaining, playing the piano, and singing.e She assisted her husband on the family farm in Smith Township, and worked at the former Swoverland Shoe Store in Churubusco for 11 years.e She was later employed as an instructional assistant at Smith Green Community Schools for seven years. She was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, its United Methodist Women, and was a past worthy matron of Churubusco Order of the Eastern Star 136. Mr. Green preceded her in death on June 6, 2010. The surviving relatives include her children William R. (Linda) Green of Churubusco, Robert B. (Dianne) Green of LaOtto, and Jack L. Green and Barbara (Kerry) Boggs, both of Churubusco; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers Hobart Nelson, Robert Nelson, and Harold Nelson; a daughter-in-law Nancy (Schenher) Green; a granddaughter Leslie Green; and a great-granddaughter Frances Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Friday, December 7, 2012, at the Churubusco United Methodist Church with Pastor Corinne Boruff-Stucker, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Thursday from 2 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
