Ann Barrett

Ann R. Barrett, 94, a resident of Churubusco, passed away at 3:50 p. m. on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne following a brief illness. Mrs. Barrett was born on November 1, 1916 in Bedford, a daughter of John Owen and Ruth (Kindred) Roberts, and graduated from Shawswick High School. A nurse all of her adult life, she graduated from St. Vincenteaas School of Nursing in Indianapolis, later earned her bachelor's in nursing from Indiana University, and had also earned a master's degree in public health administration from the University of Michigan. She was nurse with the Red Cross Bloodmobile program, and had also worked at various hospitals throughout her career.e After completing her master's degree she worked as the director of Visiting Nurse Service in Saginaw, Michigan for a period, and for two years worked for the World Health Organization on the Isle of Truk doing nurse's training. She did four tours of duty with the United States Peace Corps-twice in Sierra Leone, and once in the Republic of Malawi and in Zaire. Upon completing her Peace Corps service, she lived in Glendale, Arizona for a period and was affiliated with Lincoln Hospital there.e She was an expert seamstress and painter, and while living in that area was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year in Phoenix, where she donated her time in doing quilting and knitting afghans. She had lived in Churubusco the past eight years, and continued to volunteer her abilities in quilting and knitting for patients at the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System.e e She was given a Whitley County Heart of Gold Award for that service, and donated her financial gift to various charities. On December 28, 1940 she was married to Max L. Barrett.e He preceded her in death in 1968. The surviving relatives include her children John (Linda) Barrett of Churubusco and Elizabeth J. "Bets" Barrett of Scottsdale, Az; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter Barbara Ann Perry; by a sister Mary K. Grafton; and by a great-grandson Jared Michael Hyndman. A celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 5 p. m. on Sunday, October 16, 2011, in the fellowship hall of Churubusco United Methodist Church. At the request of Mrs. Barrett, there will be no calling hours or formal funeral service. Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco is in charge of the arrangements.
