Barbara Courtney

Barbara Lee Courtney, 49, of Avilla, passed away at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. Mrs. Courtney was born on November 25, 1965 in Gary, Indiana, a daughter of Jerry L. Griffin and Janet (Harper) Ihnat. She spent her formative years in Chesterton, and graduated from Chesterton Senior High School in 1983. On February 14, 1985 she was married to Durand Courtney. She was employed at Verizon, and retired in 2003. She also worked for Smith-Green Community Schools as a Substitute Teacher. She was dedicated to students of all ages. Mrs. Courtney attended Sugar Grove Church of God. The surviving relatives include her husband Durand Courtney of Avilla; a son, Karsten Courtney of Avilla; her mother Janet (John) Ihnat; many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Jerry Griffin and her brother, Robert L. Griffin. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Sugar Grove Church Of God, with Pastor Timothy Grable, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, or one hour prior to the service.
