Basil L. Wertman, 88, of Churubusco, passed away at Dupont Hospital on November 12, 2023.
He was born in Leo on January 28, 1935, to the late Gerald and Erma (Huff) Wertman. He spent his formative years in Leo and attended Leo High School.
After high school, Basil served in the United States Army.
Basil was a loving and devoted husband to Patricia Hemmelgarn, who preceded him in death on January 1, 1992. He was married to Beverly (Zerkle) McNall on February 14, 1998, she survives him.
Basil was a hardworking man who dedicated most of his life to his work as a semi-driver and also worked for Keystone Concrete.
He was a man of strong faith and an active Good News Baptist Church member, where he nurtured his spiritual life.
Basil is survived by his wife of 25 years, Beverly Wertman; his son, Thomas Wertman; two daughters, Loretta (Bradley) Van Emon and Ann (Sam) Frank; four stepsons, David (Carol) McNall, Michael (Kerrie) McNall, Ralph (Mary) McNall, Jr., and Randy (Connie) McNall; several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elsie Tallent.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco Chapel with calling one hour prior to the service.
The family will also receive family and friends at the funeral home, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Burial will follow at Ege Catholic Cemetery.
