Charles Eugene "Gene" Akers, 95, of rural Churubusco passed away at his home after in Green Township on June 17, 2017.
He was born on July 27, 1921 in Fort Wayne, to Millard and Mary Edna (Pippenger) Akers. He spent his formative years in Churubusco and graduated from Churubusco High School.
On December 31, 1944, he was married to Edna Mae "Eddie" Murphy, and lived all his adult life in Green Township where he engaged in farming as well as working nights at Reliable Tool and Machine in Kendallville.
He sang at church and was in a small orchestra there. His barn was a place for young people to play ball for many years. After retiring he collected coins and stamps. He loved woodworking projects and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He wife of 65 years preceded him in death on September 17, 2012.
Gene is survived by his daughters Karen (John) Whiteman, Margaret Mitchell, Becky (Ross) Klingenberger and Rhonda Akers; a brother, Philip "Tip" (Mary) Akers; grandchildren, Andrea (Ryan) Colson, Rachel (Bill) Talley, Liz (Jerry) Fye, Esther (Josh) Rose, Jonathan (Karlijn) Akers; eleven great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
In addition to his parent and spouse he was preceded in death by a brother Donald Akers.
Services will be at the Funeral home on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11: 00 a.m.
Viewing will be at Sheets & Childs Funeral home on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, from 4 to 8 p.m., and one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, Allen County
