Dean Merryman

Dean M. Merryman, 78, of Huntertown, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at his home. Born on April 23, 1940, in Huntington, he was a son of the late Clarence and Gertrude (Chronister) Merryman. He spent his formative years in Huntington, graduating from Huntington Twp High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Huntington University and later his master's degree from St. Francis. While at Huntington University he was the all-time leading scorer on the basketball team and is a part of their Hall of Fame. Dean was married to Susanna Shelhamer on August 11, 1962, at the College Park Church in Huntington. The couple moved to Huntertown in 1963. He was a high school math teacher for Northwest Allen County School from 1962 to his retirement in 1996. He was also a lifelong coach including: JV Basketball, Golf and Cross County. He enjoyed playing golf, doing cross word puzzles, coaching his sons sports teams and was an avid reader. Dean is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susanna Merryman; four sons, Mike (Dawn) Merryman, Mark (Cheryl) Merryman, Brian (Teresa) Merryman and Steve (Julie) Merryman; two sisters, Mary Alice Merryman and Rebecca (William) Schmidt; 11 grandchildren, Amy, Shane, Christopher, Jennifer, Ashley, Melinda, Madison, Grace, Ava, Chase and Whitley; six great grandchildren, Gavin, Bailee, Breeana, Olivia, Rachel and Danielle. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, David and Daniel Merryman. Visiting hours will take place at Huntertown United Methodist Church on June 3, 2018, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Calling also one hour prior to the service. Services will begin at 11:00 AM, at Huntertown United Methodist Church on June 4, 2018. Burial will follow at Huntertown Cemetery.
