Doris R. Sheets, 83, retired co-owner of Sheets Funeral Home in Churubusco and wife of Lester K. Sheets, passed away at 6 a. m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at her home in Columbia City following an extended illness. Mrs. Sheets was born on December 17, 1929 in Kosciusko County to Marvin H. and Cora A. (Weaver) Leedy. She spent her formative years in Columbia City where she lived with her parents Roy and Mildred Barnes, and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1947. On November 23, 1947 she was married in Columbia City to Lester K. Sheets and moved to Churubusco from Butler in 1951 when her husband became affiliated with Sonday Funeral Home. She was employed in the office of Dr. Linus Minnick in Churubusco for several years before she and her husband purchased the funeral home. They owned and operated Sheets Funeral Home for 30 years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, and was a member of a variety of civic and volunteer organizations. Under the leadership of Dr. Jerome Wait and Roger Wait, she helped organize the first EMS volunteer service in Churubusco. The surviving relatives include her husband Lester K. Sheets, to whom she was married for over 65 years; six children Paul W. (Sue) Miller of Fort Wayne, Dr. Douglas (Kay) Sheets of Rutherfordton, NC, Terry (Maureen) Sheets of Milan, Diane (Curt) Bair of Churubusco, Debra (Scott) Davis of Columbia City, and Timothy (Jennifer) Sheets of Murfreesboro, Tenn; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastor Barry Faucett, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Saturday morning. Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco. Those serving as pallbearers will be Stan Horne, Peter Yorg, John Allen Anderson, Victor Spear, Neetu Garcha, and Harry Garcha. Honorary pallbearers include David Bonar, Jimmie Allman, Jim Pippenger, Ronald Morris, Gary Wright, Bill Lewis, Dallas Parish, and Gordon Gilbert.
