Floyd Herdman

Floyd E. Herdman, 90, of Huntertown, passed away peacefully at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne surrounded by his loving family and the Lord, Jesus Christ. Mr. Herdman was born on February 28, 1924 in Fort Wayne, a son of Clarence and Blanche (Gebert) Herdman. He spent his formative years in Huntertown, and graduated from Huntertown High School in 1943. He was a proud WWII veteran where he fought in the 10th Infantry Division and in 1944 was wounded in Metz, France. He was a Purple Heart recipient as well as a recipient of the U.S Medal of Honor and the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal of Honor, in addition to two Campaign Bronze Stars, and Good Conduct Ribbon Awards. Floyd was honored to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with fellow WWII honorees. On April 24, 1948 he was married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Avilla, to Dolores E. Hoeppner. He was employed at Warner's Motor Service for 28 years and retired in 1989 after 18 years from IPFW. Mr. Herdman was a charter member of Our Hope Lutheran Church - Huntertown where he serviced in many offices and responsibilities, DAV Lifetime Member, VFW Lifetime Member, and Seniors Enjoying Life. Love for his country was displayed in being a member of the Veteran Associations and in the many presentations he gave to area school children describing his actions in the war. The community could count on him to deliver fruit baskets, placing flags on the graves of veterans and march in Veterans Day parades. A God fearing man, he will be most remembered for his love and pride in his family. The grandchildren recall many fond days with their grandfather especially summers on Crooked Lake, holiday and family reunions, birthday celebrations, and visits to grandma and grandpa's country home outside of Huntertown. The surviving relatives include wife, Dolores E. Herdman of Huntertown; children, Karen (Ralph) Noll of Auburn, Steve (Jeanine) Herdman of Maumee, OH, Dawn (James) Carl of Fort Wayne, and Julie (Dewaine) King of Wolcottville; a brother, Robert Herdman of Fort Wayne; a sister, Gloria (Richard) O'Connor of Fort Wayne; ten grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Blanche (Gebert) Herdman; a brother Virgil Herdman; two sisters Doris Rediger and Mary Ann Rarick. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Our Hope Lutheran Church, with Pastor Joe Fichtner, officiating. The family will receive friends at Our Hope Lutheran Church from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Huntertown Cemetery, Huntertown.
