Gary Michael Hackett, 72, of Fort Wayne, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, at Lutheran Hospital.
Gary was born in Fort Wayne to the late Merrill and Edith (Auld) Hackett. He grew up in the area and graduated from Carroll High School in 1972. Gary worked as a purchasing manager and retired from OmniSource in 2021 after 26 years of dedicated service.
On May 2, 1974, Gary was united in marriage to his beloved wife and best friend, Cheryl Lynn Biddle. Together, they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage and built a life filled with love, family, and countless memories.
Gary cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. He was their biggest fan and rarely missed an opportunity to attend their sporting events, proudly cheering them on from the sidelines. His family was at the center of his life, and he took great joy in watching his children and grandchildren grow.
Gary was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and spending time with the people he loved.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Hackett; his brother, Steven (Sheryl) Hackett; his sons, Abraham (Emily) Hackett and Zachery (Lindsay) Hackett; and his five grandchildren, Skyler, Riley, Cooper, Chance, and Sawyer, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Hackett, and his granddaughter, Sery Hackett.
Family and friends may gather at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco Chapel, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
A funeral service celebrating Gary's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco Chapel, with calling one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Eel River Cemetery in Churubusco.
Memorials may be directed to Riley Children's Hospital.
