Gerald Clyde Evans, 94, went to be with the LORD on Saturday, December 30, 2023. He passed away peacefully with his family in Columbia City.
Gerry was born to the late Wilby G. and Rethal (Beehler) Evans on March 16, 1929, and grew up in Rochester, Indiana. He graduated from Richland Center High School in 1947 and married Juanita L. Rose on April 9, 1950, in Rochester, Indiana. They resided in Fort Wayne for most of their 70 years of marriage and were blessed with 2 sons, 8 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Gerry was a dedicated, loyal man who appreciated hard work, quality livestock, IU basketball, and fancy cars and trucks. He enjoyed being outside and tinkering. He especially enjoyed state and county fairs, whether showing beef cattle and sheep as a kid or cheering for his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He shared many great stories of the fond memories he had growing up on the family farm in Rochester and showing the champion steer for several years at the Indiana State Fair. He retired from UPS as a semi-truck driver in 1991 and was awarded the distinctive honor of maintaining a perfect safe-driving record for over 31 years.
Gerry is survived by his son, Dale A. (Linda) Evans; 8 grandchildren, Andy (Angie) Evans, Jeremy Evans, Clayton (Cayla) Evans, Cassi (Mathew) Gest, Christopher (Valerie) Evans, Courtney (Corey) Eppelmann, Caylee Evans, and Calvin Evans; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita, and 2 brothers. He and his oldest son, Steven Clyde Evans, also born on March 16th, both went to be with their LORD on the same day.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 13, 2024, from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Sheets and Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco Chapel, followed immediately by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place following the funeral service at the Huntertown Cemetery.
