Grace Akers

Grace Akers, 89, a former resident of rural Churubusco in Noble County and widow of Donald G. Akers, passed away at 2:55 a. m. on Sunday, January 22, 2012, at Renaissance Village Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for nearly two years. Mrs. Akers was born in Van Wert, Ohio on September 4, 1922, a daughter of Homer and Lucy D. (Ingmire) Murphy.e She spent her formative years in Ohio, and graduated from Union Township High School near Convoy. Upon completing her education she was employed at Sears Roebuck & Company in Fort Wayne, and was married in Fort Wayne on August 30, 1942 to Donald G. Akers.e Following their marriage the couple lived in Fort Wayne for a period, but spent most of their married lives in Churubusco and in Green Township. A homemaker during her adult life, she attended the Albion Wesleyan Church.e In her leisure time she enjoyed reading, listening to music by the Bill Gaither Trio, and most especially loved and cherished her grandchildren. Mr. Akers preceded her in death on April 26, 1994. Among the surviving relatives are her children Thomas D. Akers and Donna (Darrell) Patton, both of Fort Wayne, Mary Jo (Edwin) McEowen of Columbia City, and D. Michael (Pam) Akers of Churubusco; a sister Edna (Eugene) Akers of Churubusco; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters Inez Martin, Bernice McMullin, and Ruth Gaunt. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastor Paul Boss, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Thursday morning. Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
