Harold L. Lavachek, 85, a resident of Huntertown, passed away at 6:29 a. m. on Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Parkview Hospital Randallia in Fort Wayne. Although he had been in declining health, his death was unexpected. Mr. Lavachek was born in Chicago on June 18, 1928, a son of James Wencle and Anna (Vek) Lavachek, but spent most of his formative years in Washington Township in Allen County near Wallen. As a young man he served with the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and was married in Huntertown on March 9, 1957 to Betty Myers. Harold had lived all of his adult life in Huntertown, and was previously employed at Fruehauf Trailer and International Harvester in Fort Wayne, and also at Myers Service Station in Huntertown. He retired as a custodian for Northwest Allen County Schools in 1998 after 13 years. He was a member of Huntertown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11314 and the Huntertown Pioneer Club. The surviving relatives include his wife Betty, to whom he was married for over 56 years; his daughters Patty (David R.) Houser and Cindy (Randy) Bailey, both of Huntertown; a sister Linda Nerad of Dowington, Penn; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Florence "Dolly" Smith and Shirley Kelly. Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. on Friday, July 12, 2013, at the Huntertown United Methodist Church, 16021 Lima Road, with Pastors Greg Hiatt and Larry Smith, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Thursday from 2 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service.
