Herbert Sutton

Herbert K. Sutton, 86, a resident of rural Huntertown and widely acquainted DeKalb County farmer, passed away at 3:45 p. m. on Monday, June 27, 2011, at the family residence in Butler Township. He had been in failing health for the past month. Mr. Sutton was born in Fort Wayne on November 7, 1924, a son of Charles and Mary (Rupley) Sutton. He spent his formative years in the Huntertown-LaOtto area and graduated from Huntertown High School in 1943. On March 20, 1948 he was married in Churubusco to Mary E. Geiger. He and his wife moved to their present farm home in DeKalb County in 1956 where he was engaged in farming all of his adult life, retiring in 1998. He was a school bus driver for Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community School District for 35 years, served on the Butler Township Advisory Board for several years, and was an active supporter of DeKalb County 4-H. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Hicksville, Ohio, Loyal Order of Moose Arie 1301 in Auburn, and enjoyed square dancing and participating in tractor pulls. The surviving relatives include his wife Mary, to whom he was married for over 63 years; a son Dennis (Suzanne) Sutton of LaOtto; three daughters Vickie (Richard) Nodine, Nancy (Mike) Chittenden, and Peggy (Marion) Tarlton, Jr., all of Garrett; a brother Dale (Arlene) Freeman of Huntertown; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Ilene Fulk. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Larry Smith, pastor of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Thursday from 2 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Friday morning. Interment will be in the Cedar Creek Cemetery, south of Garrett.
