J. L. "Jack" Hill

J. L. "Jack" Hill, 90, widely acquainted Green Township farmer and a former resident of rural LaOtto, passed away at 8:22 p. m. on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at The Oaks in Columbia City. He had been a patient there since September 5. Mr. Hill was born on June 14, 1924 in Green Township, a son of Lee and Romona (Haney) Hill. On November 23, 1942 he was married in Churubusco to Betty Claxton, and the couple lived most of their adult lives in Noble County. He was engaged in farming in Green Township during his working years. An active member of the Sugar Grove Church of God, he had served the church in a variety of capacities including serving as an elder and trustee. In addition to his church involvement, he was a member of the Noble County Gideons and the Indiana Tractor Pulling Association. In his leisure time he enjoyed tractor pulls, and later in life became an expert with woodworking. He loved ice cream, and most especially loved his church and his family. The surviving relatives include his widow Betty, to whom he was married for over 71 years; his children Judy (Tom) Womack of Dayton, Ohio, Harold (Pam) Hill of Churubusco, Doris (Jay) Pence of Columbia City, and Jonathan (Cheryl) Hill and David (Nellie) Page, both of LaOtto; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Ted Hill and Clark Hill; two sisters Anettia Sheets and Berenedean Brumbaugh Ruhl; and by a grandson Jeffery Hill. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at the Sugar Grove Church of God with Pastor Timothy Grable, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
