James Stephen Carter, known by many as Steve, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025, at his home. He was born in Churubusco on January 30, 1933, to the late James Wyatt and Fern Marie (Corbin) Carter. He spent his formative years in rural Churubusco and attended Collins School before graduating from Churubusco High School.
Steve was a cherished member of the community and will be deeply missed. A lifelong farmer, Steve found immense joy in working the land. His devotion to agriculture was not merely a profession but a testament to his deep-rooted love for the earth and his faith.
Steve was a devoted husband to Beverly, whom he married on July 27, 1953, at Green Center Church. The couple shared countless memories, and their love story inspired all who knew them. During the first two years of his marriage to Beverly, he served in the United States Army.
His love for his family, his work, and his hobbies, such as fishing, mushroom hunting, and collecting arrowheads, will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a lifelong member of Green Center Church.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Beverly; his daughter, Mitzi (Mike) Earnhart; his grandchildren, Myan (Charla) Earnhart, Molli (Jeremy) Dietrich, and Lacey (Eric) Buss; eight grandchildren, Terrin Dietrich, Conlan Buss, Kya Hamman, Lliam Buss, Kena Hamman, Remi Earnhart, Broden Buss, and Sadler Earnhart.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his son, Rex Carter; two sisters, Kitty Decamp and Joan Crance.
A funeral service will occur at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Green Center Church, 2861 S 300 E, Albion, with calling one hour before the service.
The family will also receive family and friends on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco Chapel, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The burial will take place at Merriam Christian Chapel Cemetery.
