James Peter Sweeney, 71, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2016 in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Sweeney was born on January 29, 1945 in La Porte, Indiana, a son of James E. and Dolores (Pliska) Sweeney. He spent his formative years in La Porte, and graduated from La Porte High School.
After high school he graduated from Ball State University with a teaching degree.
He was married in La Porte to Nancy Jo Johnson.
He taught at Northrop and later at I.P.F.W.
Mr. Sweeney was a member of St. John Bosco Church in Churubusco.
His spouse preceded him in death on October 10, 2010.
The surviving relatives include his son, James G. (Aubrey) Sweeney of Fort Wayne; a cousin, Lillian Niendorf of La Porte.
In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dolores "Dee" Kyes.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, with Father Francis Chukwuma, the celebrant.
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, or at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. The Rosary will be recited at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, La Porte.
