Laura Jane Dettmer, 76, of Huntertown, passed away on August 24, 2024, at her home.
She was born on April 26, 1948, in Muncie, to the late James and Mary (Wallace) Duffy. Laura graduated from Muncie Central High School and later pursued her higher education at Ball State University and IPFW.
Laura was married to Richard Dettmer at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Muncie, on June 6, 1970. The couple settled in Huntertown where they raised their family.
She was a dedicated teacher in the Fort Wayne Community Schools, where she spent 39 years serving as educator for the hearing impaired. She was a woman of many interests, including riding horses, downhill skiing, gardening, reading, and most importantly, caring for her beloved grandchildren.
Laura is survived by her husband, Richard "Dick" Dettmer; children, Richard Dettmer, Rachel (Steve) Haselby, Rebecca (George) Thomas, Jim (Lauren) Dettmer, and Aaron (Aubrey) Dettmer; grandchildren, John, Andrew, Ashley, Kylie, Shelby, Weston, Holden, Claire, Eloise, Rosie, Charlie, and Jack.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Theresa Kern.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2024, at St Mary of the Assumption Church, 228 North Main Street, Avilla, with calling one hour prior to the service.
The family will also receive family and friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Huntertown Chapel, on Thursday, August 29, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00.
Burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery, Huntertown.
Memorials may be directed to The National Kidney Foundation of Indiana or St Mary of the Assumption Church, for Masses.
