Lester K. Sheets, age 90, former resident of Churubusco, passed away on January 7, 2017 at his home in Fort Wayne. He was born on September 25, 1926 in Werner, North Dakota, a son of Kenneth and Ocie (Hallock) Sheets. His family moved to Fort Wayne in 1935 where he spent his formative years and graduated from Elmhurst High School in 1944. He then graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science 1947. Lester served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was married in Columbia City on November 23, 1947 to Doris R. Leedy. The couple moved from Butler to Churubusco in 1951. Lester worked for Sonday Funeral Home from 1951 until he purchased the funeral home in 1960. He retired on January 1, 1990. He was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church and served in a variety of civic and professional organizations in Churubusco. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris on July 3, 2013. Lester is survived by his six children, Paul Miller, Dr. Douglas (Kay) Sheets, Terry (Maurine) Sheets, Diane (Curt) Bair, Debra (Scott) Davis, and Timothy (Jennifer) Sheets; 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Donald Sheets; a sister Mildred Mabee. Calling will be at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home on Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., or one hour prior to funeral. Services will at 11:00 a.m., at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home on Friday, January 13, 2017, with Pastors Barry Faucett and Corinne Boruff-Stucker, officiating. Burial will follow at Eel River Cemetery, Allen County. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Colton Sheets Leukemia Fund in C/O Tim Sheets.
