Louis Harmeyer

Louis C. Harmeyer, 87, well-known Lake Township farmer in Allen County and more recently a resident of Fort Wayne, passed away at 3:45 a. m. on Friday, October 7, 2011, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne following a brief illness. Mr. Harmeyer was born on July 26, 1924 in Lake Township, a son of Louis C. and Anna (Thiele) Harmeyer. He spent his formative years on the farm that had been in his family since 1879, and graduated from Arcola High School in 1942. On March 20, 1948 he was married to Edna Kathryn Easterday. A lifelong resident of Allen County, he was engaged in operating the family farm in Lake Township until his retirement in 1994. In addition, he served as a bus driver for Northwest Allen County Schools for 33 years. He was a member of Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran Church, west of Fort Wayne, and was also a member of the Arcola Lions Club. Mrs. Harmeyer preceded him in death on April 7, 1993. His second marriage took place on June 17, 1995 to Dorothy L. (Holt) Duff. She survives. Also surviving are his children Darwin (Sheryl) Harmeyer, Barry (Diane) Harmeyer, and Elaine (Ron) Ahrens. all of Fort Wayne, Janet (Jeff) Doner of Indianapolis, Craig (Rhonda) Harmeyer of Fort Wayne, and Rosalie (Tom) Welch of Hinesburg, Vt; two step-children Tami Pierce of Avilla and Larry Duff of Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers Carl Harmeyer and Fred Harmeyer. Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. on Monday, October 10, 2011, at the Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 6318W. California Rd., with Pastors William E. Mueller and Norman Aman, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 2 to 6 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Monday afternoon. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family requests that memorials be directed to Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran Church or to Worship for Shut-Ins.
