Luis Samuel Ortiz, 53, of Garrett, passed away on January 8, 2026, at his home.
He was born on January 25, 1972, in Havana, Cuba, to the late Pedro Orlando Ortiz and Arabia Megret Matenzo.
Luis, known for his love for his family, his incredible drawing skills, and his passion for music, was a beloved father, brother, and friend. After moving from Havana to Miami in 1980, he spent some time in New Jersey before finally settling in Northern Indiana. His love for drawing, listening to music, and enjoying long walks brought joy to his routine life. Above all, Luis cherished time with his family, and he was known as a staunch Candy Crush player.
Throughout his life, Luis worked primarily as a CNC machinist, honing his skills in various workplaces. However, it was in the last five years of his life that he found his true calling in food service, working as a server at Lalos Restaurante in Garrett. His charm and dedication were widely acclaimed, and his presence will be greatly missed.
Luis is survived by his loving children, Brianna (Gideon Williams) Ortiz, Nicholas Ortiz, Vanessa Ortiz, and Veronica Ortiz; his sister, Evelyn (Juan Carlos Rogas) Ortiz.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Pedro Pablo Ortiz.
