Marilyn Y. Nelson, 82, a resident of Churubusco and widow of Fred I. Nelson, passed away at 2:58 p. m. on Sunday, October 27, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne following an extended illness. She had been taken to the hospital on Friday. Mrs. Nelson was born on September 21, 1931 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Scott W. and Kathryn L. (Wenzel) Parker. She spent her early years in Warsaw and moved with her parents to Fort Wayne in 1941. She graduated from Concordia Lutheran High School in 1949. On July 11, 1958 she was married in Fort Wayne to Fred I. Nelson. The couple moved to Churubusco in 1961, and raised their family there. Employed as a rural postal carried for the U. S. Post Office in Churubusco, she retired from there in 1997 after 17 years. She was a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, and the ladies auxiliaries of Gilbert Davis American Legion Post 157 in Churubusco and Churubusco Veteran's of Foreign Wars Turtle Post 3846. Mr. Nelson preceded her in death on November 19, 2000. The surviving relatives include her children Steven S. Nelson of Churubusco and Brenda (James) Johnson of Churubusco; two grandchildren Christopher (Jina) Johnson of Fort Wayne and Jessica Johnson of Oahu, Hawaii; and a great-grandson Slevin Johnson. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter Linda Kay Nelson on May 3, 1985. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Dr. Kathleen W. Haller, associate pastor of Trinity English Lutheran Church, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Wednesday morning. Interment will be in the Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne.
