Max W. Utterback, Sr., 74, of Huntertown, passed away on September 17, 2025, at his home.
He was born on April 27, 1951, in Roanoke, to the late Woodrow and Georgia (Odom) Utterback.
Max, a respected and beloved figure in his Huntertown community, was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to his family and his work. After graduating from Roanoke High School, he embarked on a successful career as a heavy equipment operator. His love for the job led him to a 30-year tenure at Dana, which included being Vice President of the 903 and Chairman of the bargaining committee. Eventually, he retired from Utterback & Sons Excavating and lastly Palermo Excavating.
Max was a man of many passions, including cutting grass, fishing, and tinkering. He cherished time spent at the lake, riding motorcycles, and the tranquility of wintering in Florida. However, above all else, Max treasured his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Joanna Utterback; their seven children, Darci (John) Felone, Max (Lynne) Utterback, Jr., Aaron Utterback, Mark (Stacy) Utterback, Brandy (David) Torres, Chad (Amber) Castator, and Jeffrey Utterback; three sisters, Karen Lehman, Sally Andre, and Jill (Dennis) Hoffman; nine grandchildren, Luke, Sara, Olivia, David, Aydia, Brook-lynn, Dante, Corbin, and Alex; his dogs, Pepper and Jack.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Audra Utterback, and a sister, Gloria Raichart.
A funeral service will take place at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Huntertown Chapel, with calling one hour prior.
The family will also receive friends and family on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
