Melvin E. Royal, 84, of Churubusco, passed away on May 17, 2017 at Parkview Regional Medical Center.
Born in Fort Wayne on May 1, 1933, a son of John and Rose Bell (Dull) Royal. He spent his formative years in Fort Wayne and attended Auburn High School and Central Catholic High School. Raised his family in rural Whitley county and northwest Allen county.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Melvin was married to Bonnie Niedermeyer on October 28, 1956, which he shared 61 years of marriage. Mel retired from Central Soya in 1998. For more than 50 years he pursued his true passion of raising exotic birds and animals, enjoying the challenge and adventure of breeding llamas, rheas, emus, cranes, numerous breeds of exotic pheasants and waterfowl, as well as various small breeds of deer and wallabies.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bonnie Royal of Churubusco; four children, Sandra Royal and Debra Royal both of Columbia City, Steven Royal and Diane Royal both of Fort Wayne.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Eldred Royal.
Calling hours will take place at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home on May 23, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM.
A memorial service will begin at 6:00 PM, at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home on May 23, 2017.
