Michael D. Hyndman, 66, of Columbia City, passed away on October 4, 2026, after a courageous, 18 month battle with ALS.
He was born on August 19, 1960, in Kendallville, to Arthur "Dale" and Joan (Herron) Hyndman, Michael was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, coach, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed.
Michael was married to Kari Barrett on August 1, 1980. Together they raised three kids, Jared, Jacob, and Katie.
Michael graduated from Churubusco High School in 1979 and spent a significant part of his career working as a forklift operator at Autokiniton (Tower Automotive). He also shared his love of basketball with the Churubusco community, serving as a basketball coach from 1994 to 2008, and many years of coaching Busco Youth and Wallen Baseball.
Michael was an avid outdoorsman who found peace, enjoyment, and countless memories in nature. He especially enjoyed fly-fishing and tying his own flies, taking great pride in the time and patience that went into the craft. He also enjoyed turkey hunting and traveling to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where he loved spending time in the woods and pursuing the outdoors he cherished so much. For Michael, the outdoors were not simply a pastime, but a place where he could slow down, enjoy God's creation, and make memories fishing off the dock with his grandkids.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife, Kari Hyndman; his mother, Joan Hyndman; his daughter, Katie (Buzz) Caffee; his son, Jacob (Erin) Hyndman; his sisters, Mary (Bud) Moorehouse and Teresa (Mark) Bonar; and his cherished grandchildren, Ainsley, Barrett, Sloane, and Archie; many nieces and nephews and close friends
He was preceded in death by a son, Jared Hyndman, on Dec. 24, 2002; his father, Dale Hyndman on March 14, 2021.
A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Lake Township, with calling on hour prior to the service.
The family will also receive family and friends at St. John's Lutheran Church, Lake Township, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wallen Youth League or Adams County 4-H Beef Committee.
