Ray E. Ashbaugh, 96, a resident of rural Fort Wayne and long-time Lake Township farmer, passed away at 7:55 a. m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Kingston Care Center in Fort Wayne where he had been a patient for the past eleven months. Mr. Ashbaugh was born on May 19, 1918 in Van Wert, Ohio, a son of Alva and Marvel (Shaw) Ashbaugh, and spent his formative years there. He was married in Van Wert in 1943 to Helen M. Craft and moved to Lafayette Township in Allen County in 1945 where he lived until moving to his present farm home in Lake Township in 1957. He spent all of his adult life engaged in farming. He was a member of the Lake Chapel United Methodist Church, and had served on the board of directors for the Allen Dairy for many years. Mrs. Ashbaugh preceded him in death on November 30, 2007. The surviving relatives include two sons Don (Judy) Ashbaugh of Fort Wayne and Larry (Cynthia) Ashbaugh of Columbia City; a daughter Sue (Mark) Loebert of Roanoke; two sisters Pat Hardy of Roanoke and Betty Tracey of Grover Hill, Oh; a brother Dana Ashbaugh of Florida; five grandchildren John Ashbaugh, Lori (Paul) Nunley, Melissa (Larry) Ice, Amy (James) Goodwin, and Ben (Megan) Ashbaugh; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother Carroll Ashbaugh. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Friday, September 19, 2014, in the Lake Chapel United Methodist Church, 8205 Butt Rd., with Pastors Donna Gammon, Harold Klinker, and Marilyn Dunton, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Thursday from 4 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Prairie Chapel Cemetery, Oakwood, Ohio.
