Robert C. Childs, 93, formerly of Fairmount, passed away at 8:45 p. m. on Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Heritage Pointe in Warren following an extended illness.
Mr. Childs was born in Matthews on August 16, 1918, a son of Oliver Morton and Junietta Ruth (Morris) Childs. He spent his formative years in Matthews, attended Matthews School, and graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1936.
On December 24, 1937 he was married to Anna L. Moorman, and lived in Matthews following his marriage. He served with the U. S. Navy during World War II, and after his military discharge moved to a farm northwest of Matthews in 1946. He was engaged in farming in Jefferson Township for many years, and moved to Fairmount in 1963.
In addition to farming, he was employed as the manager of the Emge Stock Yards in Fairmount for 26 years, retiring in 1981. He and his first wife were summer residents of Epworth Forest in North Webster from 1980 to 1994, and enjoyed wintering in Bradenton, Florida.
He was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Matthews, attended the Fairmount Friends Meeting House, and had been an active member of the Fairmount Lions Club for many years.
Mrs. Childs preceded him in death on July 6, 1998. On September 1, 1999 he was married to Ruby (Everitt) McClarnon, and moved to Warren following his second marriage, continuing to winter in Bradenton, Florida.
The surviving relatives include his second wife Ruby; four children Tom J. (Nancy) Childs and Linda (Gary) Bragg, both of Muncie, Mark (Sue Ellen) Childs of Hagerstown, and Jeffrey J. (Connie) Childs of Barrington, Ill; three step-children Ronald McClarnon of Indianapolis, Diane Nei of Huntington, and Jay McClarnon of Bourbon; a daughter-in-law Rosemary Childs of Bethlehem, Penn; a sister Illon Freese of Hartford City; 11 grandchildren Lori (Steve) Orander, Angela St. John, Rob (Rena) Childs, Michelle Healy, James (Genana) Bragg, Jay (Julianne) Bragg, Cory (Kelly) Childs, Kevin (Jamie Geer) Childs, Emily Childs, Bret Sears, and Chris Childs; 12 step-grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a son Ronald D. Childs in 2004; five brothers Earl O. W. Childs, Herman L. Childs, O. Morris Childs, LD Childs, and Charles E. Childs; and by four sisters Neva Childs, Nina Childs, Delight Gadbury, and Elizabeth Losh.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Thursday, August 9, 2012, at the Armes-Hunt Funeral Home in Fairmount, with Pastor Jackie Michaelson, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Thursday morning.
Interment with military graveside rites will be in the Matthews Cemetery.
