Robert L. Wheaton, 71, a resident of rural Churubusco, passed away at 11:02 a. m. on Friday, July 9, 2010, at his residence in Smith Township.e He had been in failing health since 1996. Mr. Wheaton was born in Fort Wayne on July 12, 1938, a son of Russell and Lexie (Hughes) Wheaton, and as a young man served with the U. S. Navy. On March 25, 1960 he was married in Fort Wayne to Regina Lidster.e He had been employed for 30 years at Peter Eckrich in Fort Wayne, and later worked for eight years in the maintenance department at Parkview Hospital until illness forced him to retire. Mrs. Wheaton preceded him in death on September 5, 2007. The surviving relatives include his four children Timothy [Betty] Wheaton of Fort Wayne, Kip [Lisa] Wheaton of Churubusco, Kent [Leslie] Wheaton of Fort Wayne, and Dawn [Rob] Riggs of Garrett; his mother Lexie Eubank of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his father and his wife, he was also preceded in death by a sister Rose Krock. Services will be held at 7 p. m. on Friday, July 16, 2010, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Corinne K. Boruff, pastor of Churubusco United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 4 p. m. on Friday until the time of the service.
