Roger K. Smith

Roger K. Smith, 94, of Churubusco, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Lutheran Life Villages.

He was born on January 21, 1932, in Churubusco, to the late Leo and Dorothy (Hivley) Smith. Roger graduated from Huntertown High School in 1952 and spent his life working as a farmer, electrician, carpenter, and skilled general contractor. He was known for his ability to build, repair, and create just about anything.

He was married to Karen L. Gaerte on June 7, 1958. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2020, after 62 years of marriage.

Roger was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling with Karen in their RV, and using his creativity to make things that brought joy to others, including his memorable pop can airplanes.

Roger was a devoted member of Blue River Covenant Brethren Church, where he enjoyed fellowship with his church family and shared his many talents.

He is survived by his sons, Jeffrey (Denise) Smith and James (Becky) Smith; his daughter, Jacqueline (Michael) Clouse; brothers, David Smith and Larry (Roseann) Smith; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Phyllis Meyer and Marilyn Waterson; his brothers, Max Smith and Donald Smith.

Friends may gather for a viewing on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco Chapel.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Blue River Church of the Brethren, with calling one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow in the Eel River Cemetery, Churubusco.
