Thomas Eugene Dewart, 77, of Albion, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2023, at his home with his girls around him.
He was born in Fort Wayne on January 24, 1945, to the late Delmar E. and Louise (Todd) Dewart. He spent his formative years in Fort Wayne.
Thomas served his country in the United States Marine Corp, the Army National Guard, and the Air Guard.
Thomas was married to Katherine (Priest) Sheilds, on June 27, 1991. She preceded him in death on September 9, 2001.
He worked at Pendleton Correctional and Chain O'Lakes Correctional Facility as a correctional officer for more than 30 years.
Thomas was a member of the UAW, the American Legion, and the AFT Local 9212.
In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, going out on the boat, playing horses and cards, watching westerns, and traveling to warmer climates.
Thomas is survived by his three daughters, Dawn (Brian Burns) Schenher, Tina (Michael) Adams, and Kimberly (Darin) Winget; two stepsons, David and Dean Sheilds; an ex-stepdaughter, Christine Turo-Shields; a sister, Jody (Will) Zurbrugg; a brother-in-law, David Owens; a sister-in-law, Becky Dewart; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Dewart; a sister, Diane Owens; a grandson, A.J. Schenher.
Funeral services will take place at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco Chapel, on Monday, January 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with calling one hour prior to the service.
The family will also receive family and friends at the funeral home, on Sunday, January 15, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Burial will follow at Christian Union Cemetery, Garrett.
