Thomas O. Targgart, 88, a resident of Churubusco and formerly of Green Township in Noble County, passed away at 6:00 p. m. on Thursday, November 28, 2013, at Heritage Park Nursing Home in Fort Wayne following a lengthy illness. He had been a patient there for over two years. Mr. Targgart was born in Wolf Lake on February 6, 1925, a son of Dae H. and Hattie (Gay) Targgart. He spent his formative years in that area and graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1943 where he was a member of its 1942 basketball regional championship team. On July 12, 1947 he was married in Lancaster to Donna M. Nolt, and lived all of his married life in Green Township until moving to his present home in Churubusco in 2010. In his early years he was engaged in farming and had also worked at the former Fisher's Service Station in Churubusco. Employed at Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne for 29 years, he retired from there as a materials handler in 1990. He was a member of the Sugar Grove Church of God, north of Churubusco, and was an avid Indiana University basketball fan. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, camping, his farm, and most especially loved and cherished his family. The surviving relatives include his wife Donna, to whom he was married for over 66 years; his three children Steven L. (Rebecca) Targgart, Keith N. (Patsy) Targgart, and Cheryl A. Zonker, all of Churubusco; seven grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, and 18 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Aldena Harris; and by two brothers Dae Targgart, Jr. and Glen Targgart. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Monday, December 2, 2013, at the Sugar Grove Church of God with Pastor Timothy Grable, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Sunday from 2 to 5 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.
