Our History

For more than 140 years, our funeral home has been a trusted part of the Churubusco community, serving generations of families with compassion, dignity, and care. Our roots trace back to the late 1800s, when Samuel Barr became the town’s first undertaker, establishing a tradition of service that has continued ever since.

Through the years, the funeral home passed through the hands of several dedicated owners, each building upon the foundation of those before them. In 1906, Francis M. Sonday began a remarkable 45-year legacy of service, later continued by his wife, Daisy, who faithfully carried on the work after his passing.

In 1960, Lester and Doris Sheets took ownership, guiding the funeral home with heartfelt dedication for nearly three decades. Their commitment to families and the community left a lasting impact that is still felt today. In 1990, Childs's Family continued that tradition, further strengthening the funeral home’s reputation for personal, meaningful service.

A new chapter began on July 1, 2016, when Miles and Tarah Wilson proudly purchased the funeral home. Today, it remains family owned and operated by the Wilson family, continuing a legacy built on trust, faith, and personal care. For the Wilsons, this is more than a profession—it is a calling. On any given day, you may even see their children lending a hand, reflecting their belief that serving families is truly a family mission.

As a member of the Indiana Historic Business Register, the funeral home has been recognized for over a century of continuous operation and was honored as “Business of the Year” by the Churubusco Chamber of Commerce. Operating from its historic downtown location, the funeral home also preserves meaningful pieces of history, including a pre-Civil War horse-drawn hearse that reminds us of the deep roots of this profession.

While much has changed over the decades, one thing remains the same: a steadfast commitment to caring for families with compassion, respect, and personal attention. The Wilson family is honored to carry this legacy forward—serving not just as funeral directors, but as neighbors, friends, and part of the community.
